When the 2024 NFL season started, vibes were good for the New York Jets and their staring quarterback, four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers. Sure, they had finished 7-10 last season and missed the postseason. Yes, the future Pro Football Hall of Famer missed virtually his entire first season in New York with a torn Achilles. But all the weaknesses that the team had were exposed and, supposedly, fixed. 2024 was finally going to be the year the Jets would end the longest postseason drought in major professional sports.
But it wasn’t. Instead, it was an unmitigated disaster. The Jets fired head coach Robert Saleh following their 2-3 start, hoping a different voice would jumpstart the team.
It didn’t.
New York went just 3-9 the rest of the way, fired general manager Joe Douglas midseason, and missed the postseason yet again.
The New York Jets Are Reportedly Moving on from Aaron Rodgers in 2025
This past season, Rodgers completed 63.0% of his passes for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, and a 90.5 passer rating. But while these numbers rank at or near the top of New York’s single-season record lists, they were far below what was expected of the four-time NFL MVP, even though he is 41 years old.
Additionally, the culture of locker room is in obvious need of a shift, and new head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey apparently believe that will best be achieved without the controversial quarterback.
Per a report by Jay Glazer of Fox Sports, the Jets informed Rodgers this past week that they will be moving on from him in 2025:
Big scoopage: Aaron Rodgers flew back to New Jersey last week to meet with the Jets about his future with the team, only to be told that the team was moving on from him. If that means that he will be a June 1 designation that allows him to sign with any team in the league on…

“Aaron Rodgers flew back to New Jersey last week to meet with the Jets about his future with the team, only to be told that the team was moving on from him. If that means that he will be a June 1 designation that allows him to sign with any team in the league on March 12 if he decides to continue to play. Given that Aaron made the effort to fly back to discuss his future, all signs point to him continuing to play. It just won’t be for the Jets.”
New York Jets Fans Are Not Thrilled with the Decision to Move on from Aaron Rodgers
While Rodgers showed obvious signs of decline, the fact of the matter is that New York does not exactly have another quarterback who can step in as their franchise starter. Veteran Tyrod Taylor was signed to be the backup last offseason, but he is by no means a long-term answer at the position.
In other words, Jets fans are not so sure of what the plan at quarterback will be as Rodgers, as bad as 2024 was, currently appears (in their minds) to be their best option:
The Jets will never matter as long as @woodyjohnson4 owns the team. Their commitment to losing is unmatched. https://t.co/H9FwgqRIP9

I’d rather have the corpse of Aaron Rodger’s than Sam https://t.co/JxLjbo2t6v pic.twitter.com/fKJc3KwsN4

The Jets will regret this.
Rodgers could have been a bridge to the next guy. Now the Jets are going to roll the dice at QB with Lord knows who https://t.co/u1sYb4nwB6

I get that Aaron Glenn wants a clean slate. This is probably the right play long term. Short term, the Jets are going to be one of the worst offensive teams in the league next season. https://t.co/adlziSEgxX

It will be interesting to see where Rodgers ends up if the report turns out to be accurate. There are plenty of quarterback-needy teams in the NFL.
And now the Jets are one of them.
