The New York Giants will have a new look backfield next fall after longtime running back and team icon Saquon Barkley darted for the Philadelphia Eagles. Barkley spent six seasons donning the dark blue, red, and white, tallying two Pro Bowl appearances and 7,311 scrimmage yards. Barkley will now take his talents to rival Philadelphia, leaving New York with a massive hole regarding rushing production. However, according to NFL insider Aaron Wilson, the Giants are eyeing former Florida State Seminoles star Trey Benson and could make a draft day to acquire his services.
Benson shined during the 2023 season with FSU, and per Wilson, he has drawn heavy interest from the Giants. He remains a top running back prospect in the upcoming NFL draft.
Trey Benson: Top End Running Back Talent in 2024 NFL Draft
NFL Draft Buzz says Trey Benson is the fourth-ranked running back in his class. At the 2024 Scouting Combine, Benson ran a 4.39 40-yard dash and a 1.52 10-yard split, both elite numbers. He also posted solid numbers in the bench press and shuttle while clocking in at six feet, 216 pounds.

Benson started his college career with the Oregon Ducks in 2020, where he spent two seasons. The Mississippi native transferred to the Florida State football program for the 2022 campaign, rushing for 990 yards and nine touchdowns on 154 attempts. He also caught 13 passes for 144 yards. Benson posted career numbers this season, collecting 1,133 scrimmage yards and 15 scores while helping the Seminoles post an undefeated regular season.
New York Giants: Looking to Revamp Running Back Room
The New York Giants will need to replace the production of all-world rusher Saquon Barkley. Last month, they inked former Houston Texans and Buffalo Bills running back Devin Singletary to a three-year, $16.5 million contract. Meanwhile, they still house Eric Gray and Gary Brightwell. Gray, a rookie rusher from Oklahoma, rushed 17 times for 48 yards last season. Conversely, Brightwell has spent his entire three-year NFL career with New York, rushing 41 times for 164 yards and a score.
Trey Benson would be a welcome sight for Giants fans. NFL Draft Buzz projects Benson as a third-round draft pick. The last time New York selected a running back in the top three rounds of the NFL draft was Saquon Barkley in 2018 (second overall selection).
