For New York Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito, it has been a ride and a half. After the New York Giants lost starting signal caller Daniel Jones, and backup Tyrod Taylor also went down due to injury, the New Jersey native was thrust into the spotlight. Winning three straight games, it seemed that the entirety of the football media world was monitoring the story of Tommy DeVito. Since beating the Green Bay Packers however, it has not exactly been smooth sailing for him or this team.
New York Giants Reaction To Benching
New York Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito appears to be taking it all in stride. Sharing some insight into how he is handling this latest development in his career, he expressed the following about what it meant to be in his current position:
I belong in the NFL, I mean just to go out and to prove that to myself. To the younger me, to the me that was training to be here to this point. That’s all it is.
This quote follows the announcement that Tyrod Taylor would no longer be the starter, and that Tyrod Taylor would be in the starting role moving forward. If anyone concerned about how Tommy DeVito would handle the benching, those matters appear to be able to be laid to rest for now.
New York Giants Offense As Of Late
Things had been going well! In his three wins, Tommy DeVito was inspiring his teammates, and they were able to move the ball on opposing defenses. During the three game stretch that started against the Washington Commanders, DeVito threw for five touchdowns, and more importantly zero turnovers.
His best performance by far was against a playoff contending Green Bay Packers team. Making the right plays, he was equally impressive as a runner, picking up first downs as needed.
From there the quarterback is struggled a bit more. Against the New Orleans Saints he threw for less than 100 yards, and against the Philadelphia Eagles, even less, with 55 yards passing. This led to Tyrod Taylor finishing the game, and the eventual most recent decision.
It is not uncommon to see a slump after some success, especially from backups. Defensive coordinators get a chance to figure out what you do best, and take it away from you. For DeVito, if he can get into situations that allow him to lean on the running attack, from both running backs, and himself, this would serve as his biggest ally, as he develops is passing game.
New York Giants Career Before Joining
DeVito is used to playing in this type of role. Before finishing his college career at Illinois, he was a backup for the Syracuse Orange. While playing as a second stringer to Eric Dungey, he entered the game for the injured starter against the Florida State Seminoles, leading Syracuse to a 30-7 victory. Later during the same season, he had to again step up to replace the injured starter, and inspired a 40-37 overtime win against the North Carolina Tar Heels from the bench.
Some are claiming that he isn’t a quality starting caliber quarterback in this league. DeVito will be out to prove those naysayers wrong, as he has his entire career.
