It’s no secret that Daniel Jones and the New York Giants are struggling early into the season. For franchise great Tiki Barber, though, a coaching change may occur if their downward spiral continues down the line.
Giants head coach Brian Daboll has found himself under intense scrutiny following a disappointing start to the season. Since leading the team to a playoff appearance in 2022, the Giants have struggled, posting a 7-14 record. Daboll’s initial success, marked by improved performances from Jones, has faded, raising concerns about his future.
With high expectations after last year’s playoff run, the pressure has mounted in New York’s demanding market. Daboll took over play-calling duties this season, hoping to revitalize an offense that has not clicked. As the Giants continue to falter, speculation grows about whether they might part ways with him, particularly if Jones fails to perform.
Daboll’s five-year contract offers some financial flexibility for the team if they decide to make a change. The Giants have cycled through several coaches since Tom Coughlin’s departure in 2015, and Daboll’s tenure might end if the team doesn’t demonstrate significant improvement.
Tiki Barber Gets Real on Possible Coaching Change With the New York Giants
Daboll’s inability to coach New York to a winning record may cost him his job sooner than later. As it stands, Barber has some insight on what can possibly happen, as seen in an article DJ Siddiqi wrote for Responsible Gambler.
“If things get really bad, I think the Giants and ownership have shown that the only way they’ll move off of a coach is if you earn your way off,” says Barber. “That would mean not only does the season fall apart, but the rhetoric turns really rough and it’s bad – like (former) coach Joe Judge talked himself out of a job. I think Ben McAdoo was kind of similar, making a bad decision, benching Eli Manning for Geno Smith at the end of that one season. It just left a very sour taste. Not only does the team have to be bad, there has to be other circumstances that cause it not to be a tenable situation,” Barber said.
The Giants are feeling the pressure as they struggle with a 1-3 record. Despite initial hopes for the season, the team’s performance has left fans and management unsettled, raising concerns about their direction moving forward.
The combination of Daboll’s past success and the current lack of results puts him in a precarious position. For now, the focus remains on whether he can turn the season around and secure his job, or if the Giants will once again be on the hunt for a new leader.
