The New York Giants hold the number six pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and, therefore, have a number of options on how to improve their roster. After yet another disappointing season that saw $160 million man Daniel Jones go 1-5 in the six games that he played, it became painfully obvious to the Giants what has been obvious to the rest of the NFL for the last couple of years. That is, they either need to move on from Jones at quarterback or get him a legitimate wide receiver.
The New York Giants Cannot Afford to Move on From Daniel Jones (Yet)
But let’s face it, even if the Giants wanted to move on from Jones, they certainly can not do it in 2024. This upcoming season will be just the second year of his four-year $160 million contract. If the Giants were to release him now, they would carry a $69.3 million dead cap hit. That is $22 million more than they would pay him to be on the team this season.
If the Giants are not convinced that Jones is their future after this upcoming season, they can release him and save $19.4 million on their salary cap in 2025.
For 2024, though, Jones will be on the roster, and for that amount of money, he should be starting.
The New York Giants Have a Wide Receiver Problem
As poorly as Jones and the rest of the Giants quarterbacks played last season, it is not like the front office has given the passing game any top wide receivers that would bring legitimacy to New York’s passing game.
Last season, Darius Slayton was the Giants’ leading receiver with 770 yards and four touchdowns. Only two other wide receivers had more than 300 yards all season: Wan’Dale Robinson (525) and Jalin Hyatt (373).
Clearly, if Jones and the Giants want to improve in 2024, they need a massive upgrade to their wide receiver room.
A Trade Proposal on Bleacher Report Sends 2 New York Giants 2nd Round Picks to the San Francisco 49ers for Brandon Aiyuk
In a recent trade scenario posted on Bleacher Report, it is suggested that the Giants could use their high second round pick in 2024 and their second round pick in 2025 to get the disgruntled Brandon Aiyuk off of the San Francisco 49ers.
Aiyuk and his girlfriend have both made social media posts that indicate that the 2023 Second Team All Pro is not planning on coming back to San Francisco despite the 49ers picking up his fifth-year option. Furthermore, with an incredibly high salary cap as it is, the 49ers likely will not be able to afford extending Aiyuk anyway.
This scenario would be a win-win for both teams. The Giants would get a legitimate wide receiver who would automatically become Jones’ number one target. The 49ers, on the other hand, will get two high draft picks with which to pick cheap talent.
As an added bonus. the Giants would retain the sixth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, which they could use on a quarterback if they are already doubting Jones’ future, or on a top wide receiver who could slide in as a top two or three pass catcher on the team.
