The New Orleans Saints, like most NFL teams, are facing a challenging cap situation this offseason. Because they’re projected to be nearly $84 million over the cap, good for the highest in the league, they may have to decide whether to keep or cut one of their most high-profile players.
With that said, Alvin Kamara was recently named by Matt Okada (via the NFL Network) as a potential cap casualty. If the New Orleans Saints ultimately cut the 28-year-old, doing so would clear up $11.7 million in cap space.
But is cutting one of the team’s best players the way to go for the New Orleans Saints? It really depends on who you ask.
Should the New Orleans Saints keep or cut Alvin Kamara?
Alvin Kamara has been one of the New Orleans Saints’ most consistent performers, but he is coming off a down year by his standards. In the 2023 season, Kamara had a career-low of 1,160 scrimmage yards (694 rushing and 466 receiving) and six touchdowns.
He will be earning roughly $12 million next season and $25 million in 2025, and by that time, Kamara will be reaching “old” status by NFL running back standards.
While that could make the case for cutting Kamara, Jaleel Grandberry from WhoDatDish.com disagrees since he still believes that the former third-rounder still has much left in his tank.
“His decline in production should be attributed to his role in the offense and the inconsistency of the players around him,” wrote Grandberry. “Things are expected to change with Klint Kubiak now running the offense, along with the other key hires to the offensive staff.”
Grandberry added that the only time for the New Orleans Saints to consider waiving Alvin Kamara is if the team decides to go into a full-scale rebuild. But after barely missing the NFL playoffs last season (9-8 record), that may not be the case.
Alvin Kamara linked with a move to the AFC North
With the Baltimore Ravens aiming to strengthen their run game, they may consider acquiring Alvin Kamara if they miss out on Derrick Henry. According to betonline.ag, Baltimore is listed at +300 odds to get the Atlanta-born rusher.
Bleacher Report once proposed the idea of sending Alvin Kamara to Baltimore for a 2024 seventh-round pick, which is quite silly if we’re being honest.
