Changes were expected to be made with the New England Patriots heading in a new direction with first-year head coach Jerod Mayo. One move that has been rumored was trading away quarterback Mac Jones and that is exactly what happened on Sunday morning. According to Adam Schefter, the New England Patriots have agreed to trade former first-round pick Mac Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for a sixth-round pick.
This seems to be a fresh start for both sides as Mac Jones struggled in his three seasons with the New England Patriots. Last year, he played in 11 games and finished 224-of-345 (64.9 completion percentage) for 2,120 yards with 10 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. However, his 36.7 QBR was 28th in football. It will be interesting to see how this works for both sides as Jones will become the backup for the Jacksonville Jaguars behind the first-overall pick in the same draft class in Trevor Lawrence.
For the Patriots, there will be a new starting quarterback but there are a handful of different ways the team can go. Will they go with a veteran free agent, draft a quarterback with the third overall pick in six weeks or give the reigns to Bailey Zappe?
Who will be the starting quarterback for the New England Patriots in Week 1?
The New England Patriots have a gigantic hole in the quarterback position and with the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft, people are expecting them to draft a quarterback. However, with wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. expected to be on the draft board at that time, the team may sign a veteran quarterback like Russell Wilson or Joe Flacco as a one-year bridge quarterback.
With the 2025 NFL draft class including players like Quinn Ewers, Carson Beck and Shedeur Sanders, this would be a way to get some decent play and have an amazing playmaker to throw the football to. The front office has some interesting decisions to make and they have a battle in the AFC East this upcoming season with Aaron Rodgers, Tua Tagovailoa and Josh Allen on the opposing sidelines for six games.
