It’s no secret the New England Patriots are having a hard time right now, as evidenced by their recent loss to the San Francisco 49ers. This led to a troubling statistic discovered by ESPN in their latest NFL analysis.
In a decisive victory, the 49ers defeated the Patriots with a score of 30-13, snapping a two-game losing streak. Quarterback Brock Purdy showcased his skills, throwing for 288 yards and a touchdown, while Fred Warner made a significant impact with a 45-yard pick-six. The 49ers’ defense was relentless, recording six sacks against Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett, who struggled to generate any offensive momentum.
San Francisco controlled the game early, with Jake Moody kicking two field goals before Warner’s interception set the tone. Despite some initial struggles, including penalties that nullified potential touchdowns, Purdy connected with George Kittle for a key touchdown, extending their lead to 20-0 before halftime.
The Patriots, now 1-3, found it challenging to establish their passing game, with Brissett completing 19 of 32 passes for 168 yards. New England’s offense has yet to surpass 150 passing yards in any game this season, raising questions about Brissett’s future as a starter. Coach Jerod Mayo expressed confidence in Brissett while acknowledging the need for evaluation.
ESPN Highlights Troubling New England Patriots’ Offense During Recent Loss to San Francisco 49ers
The Patriots’ recent loss pointed a lot of eyes towards their offense. In an analysis by Mike Reiss for ESPN, a troubling statistic was discovered during their loss against the 49ers.
Troubling trend: RB Rhamondre Stevenson’s ball security. The Patriots’ top running back has fumbled in each of the first four games. The shaky ball security didn’t hurt the Patriots in the first two games of the season because they recovered them. But they’ve stung the past two, with both recovered by opponents and turned into field goals. For a Patriots’ offense that is limited in its firepower, such self-inflicted wounds are unsustainable.
The Patriots are seeking to bolster their struggling offense, currently ranked last in total and passing yards. After three consecutive losses, the team is exploring options to improve their offensive line, which has allowed 17 sacks this season.
Recently, veteran offensive lineman Jesse Davis was brought in for a workout. Davis, who has extensive experience playing both guard and tackle, could provide the depth needed as the Patriots prepare for their Week 5 matchup against the Miami Dolphins. Strengthening the line is crucial for enhancing overall performance.
