The signs are starting to point to Davante Adams having played his last game in a Las Vegas Raiders uniform.
Tuesday, reports surfaced not only that Adams had requested a trade but that the Raiders are open to the idea of dealing the star wide receiver.
“All I can control is this talk we’re having right here. And then, after we’re done with this, all I can control is the next thing that I’m on to,” Adams said during an appearance on Up & Adams with Kay Adams.
Rumors have swirled for months that Adams wants out of Vegas, and there has been rampant speculation that the New York Jets could be an ideal destination, particularly given the chance for the 31-year-old to reunite with quarterback Aaron Rodgers, from their time together with the Green Bay Packers.
However, there is another surprise contender on the east coast who should aggressively try to land Adams in the weeks leading up to the NFL trade deadline.
Why the Washington Commanders Should Trade for Davante Adams
Led by wunderkind rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, the Washington Commanders are among the biggest surprise contenders across the league.
Riding a three-game winning streak, the Commanders sit atop the NFC East after the season’s first month as Daniels is completing an eye-popping 82.1 percent of his passes for 897 yards with three touchdowns to just one interception.
Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Eagles have lost two of three with quarterback Jalen Hurts having committed at least turnover per game over the last nine games dating back to last season, and the Dallas Cowboys are struggling to find an identity on offense with Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence potentially each out for the next several weeks, dealing the defense some adversity.
Put simply, the Commanders have sudden and surprising window of opportunity to compete, and a rookie quarterback who could significantly benefit from adding playmaking weapons around him on offense.
Adams pushes Washington closer to being capable of winning a division championship and his presence opposite Terry McLaurin would form one of the more formidable receiver duos in the league which should make things easier for Daniels to make major strides.
Set to count collect $13.5 million for the remainder of this season and his salary ballooning to $36.5 million per season over the next two years, there are few teams with the resources to acquire Adams that are also in a position to meaningfully compete over that stretch.
Washington is exceptionally well positioned from a cap space perspective to make a big splash by trading for Adams, with $25.4 million in spending flexibility this season, $121.4 million in 2025, and upwards of $158 million in 2026.
Thanks to Washington’s surprisingly fast start to the season, the consideration when it comes to Daniels’ development, and abundant cap space, general manager Adam Peters has the flexibility to make a splash and a roster ready to go all in on a blockbuster trade for Adams.
