The New England Patriots used the 15th overall pick to take Mac Jones during the 2024 NFL Draft. Now, it’s even unknown if they can get back a fifth-rounder in a trade for him.
Jones is expected to be traded this offseason as the Patriots look to start anew in the post-Bill Belichick era. However, for those hoping that New England could get something significant in any deal for Jones, they should tone down their expectations.
Mac Jones’ Trade Value With New England Patriots
According to the NFL executives that Andrew Callahan and Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald talked to, Jones’ trade value is predicted to be a fifth-round pick. However, one talent evaluator claimed that New England might even have a hard time getting a sixth-rounder for the 25-year-old signal-caller.
“Three front-office executives told the Herald quarterback Mac Jones should fetch around a fifth-round pick in trade talks with other teams. Another AFC evaluator suggested the Patriots might be lucky to land a sixth-rounder. Jones is reportedly expected to be traded this offseason, as the team plans to upgrade its quarterbacks room,” the Boston Herald report shared.
Jones had some success in his first year with the Patriots, as they made it to the playoffs with the rookie quarterback. While they lost to the Buffalo Bills in the Wild Card round, there were high hopes that Jones was going to have a fruitful career.
Unfortunately, Jones’ time with the Patriots was marred with inconsistency, and he was never able to really take the next step. There were plenty of times that Jones was even benched.
While it’s unfair to blame Jones for all the Patriots’ struggles, the fact of the matter is he’s part of the problem since he was unable to develop the way New England expected him to. His leadership has been often questioned as well.
New England Patriots Looking To Trade Mac Jones
Regardless of the insignificant return they are set to get, the New England Patriots appear to be determined to move on from Mac Jones.
They are set to take a quarterback with the no. 3 pick in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft, and several experts agree that parting ways with Jones is the most beneficial for both sides. Chad Graff and Jeff Howe of The Athletic even recently reported that, “people close to the team said Mac Jones could benefit from leaving the scar tissue that has built up with the Patriots over three offensive coordinators in three years, poor play and several benchings.”
It remains to be seen where Jones will actually end up with, but it’s safe to assume at this point that his days as a Patriot is over.
While there have been talks about the Patriots potentially keeping Jones, it’s definitely an unlikely scenario now–especially with the team interested in bringing in Jayden Daniels.
