The New England Patriots are largely expected to move on from Mac Jones this offseason amid his struggles with the team over the last three years. Nonetheless, it doesn’t really look like that the franchise has made a decision on the 25-year-old quarterback.
According to new offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, the possibility remains for Jones to not only return next season but also start as their QB1.
Mac Jones Returning to New England Patriots?
Van Pelt made the revelation in a recent video interview with the media. When asked if there is a possibility for Jones to start in 2024, the new OC didn’t close the door to that and emphasized they are still going through the process of assessing their options and next steps.
As everyone knows, a new era is set to begin in New England, with former head coach Bill Belichick parting ways with the team after an ugly 4-13 season.
Jerod Mayo has since taken over and bringing in his own staff, with Van Pelt being hired away from the Cleveland Browns to handle the offensive play-calling duties.
“Really right now, everything is on the table. We’re just still working through that process. I’m sure it’ll be a collaborative effort, and we’ll make the right decisions when the time comes,” Van Pelt explained, via NBC Sports.
The 53-year-old tactician added that there are still “some pieces of the puzzle not put in place yet.” But he did say that the team is taking shape bit by bit.
“The biggest thing is that there’s some good pieces in place. I think the best thing for everybody is going to be a fresh start for everybody. I talked to a couple of guys already. Coming in with a clean slate, not preconceived expectations or notions of who these guys are and then we’ll build it from the ground up. But exciting to have the opportunity to do that,” Van Pelt added.
Patriots fans certainly won’t like the possibility of Mac Jones returning to the team, not after a second straight year that they missed the postseason and Jones tallying career-worst numbers in almost all statistical categories.
But hey, perhaps a new coach would help revitalize his career in a way Belichick couldn’t. For now, it seems fans will have to wait to see if the Patriots will keep Jones or not.
New England Patriots Could Draft a Quarterback in NFL Draft
Before fans worry, though, it’s worth noting that the New England Patriots own the no. 3 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and are well in position to take a QB. Perhaps the team is simply waiting for the rookie selection before making their decision on Mac Jones.
In the latest mock draft by Field Yates of ESPN, he predicted that the Patriots will take Drake Maye with their selection, explaining that the North Carolina standout has the “prototypical build for an NFL passer.”
“Maye is a strike-thrower when targeting the middle of the field, but he also shows nifty pocket agility to extend plays and has 16 rushing touchdowns over the past two seasons. As the Patriots embark on a new era under Jerod Mayo, they could build the new offense around Maye,” Yates added.
It remains to be seen what the Patriots will actually do, but as Alex Van Pelt hinted, fans shouldn’t be surprised with whatever they do.
