The New England Patriots are officially putting their faith in Drake Maye. The pick is in and the Patriots first pick in the Jerod Mayo era is going to be North Carolina’s Drake Maye.
There were many NFL insiders that predicted this move and now it is official. Maye will walk into a team that features an entire new coaching staff in hopes that they will all grow together.
New England Patriots Select Their Quarterback For The Future
Maye had his best season in his last year in college football posing and impressive stat line of 3,608 yards, 24 touchdowns, 9 interceptions, and a QBR of 79.3. While these numbers do not jump[ off the table, Maye is just 21 years of age and his talent and natural ability to deliver accurate passes is what landed him No. 3 overall.
The 21-year-old is fearless in the pocket and makes gutsy tight-window throws that pro scouts love to see. Those traits, along with athleticism to move outside the pocket and a good touch on his deep ball, make Maye an enticing talent as he transitions to the NFL.
POSITIVES
— Good athletic ability. Quick for his size, good speed to threaten defenses as a scrambler and designed runner.
— Very good arm strength. Throws with tons of velocity outside the numbers and down the field.
— Great ability to throw off-platform and under pressure. Can rip it when the pocket is cluttered or when he’s on the move.
— Great accuracy. Throws well to all three levels and shows flashes of special touch.
— Above-average ability to operate within structure. Plays on time and knows how to get to the checkdown.
How Will Drake Maye Fit With
Maye will come into the league at just 21 years old and he will also not have a lot of help on the offensive side of the ball with the Patriots. It is not crazy to think that Maye may sit his first year behind Jacoby Brissett to learn the game and the speed.
Brissett learned from Patriots legend Tom Brady, and this team is hoping they got their next franchise quarterback just now.
The Patriots have a lot to do to get back to being a contender but if Drake Maye is their future franchise guy then this will be a huge step in the right direction.
