It appears that the New England Patriots are ready to rewind the clock 20 years already. On Friday, a trailer premiered for a 10-part docuseries focused on the Brady and Belichick years. It is scheduled to come out on February 16, five days after the Super Bowl. The 2023 iteration of New England’s team is 2-8 and owners of the NFL’s second-worst point differential, so don’t expect them to be participants.

From 2001-2019, the New England Patriots defined professional football excellence. They won six Super Bowls in nine trips during that span. Only once did they finish with fewer than 10 wins (2002), and twice did they not win the AFC East (2002, 2008) during that stretch. Foxborough, Massachusetts became the undisputed home of winning for an entire generation of NFL fans.
Things haven’t been the same since Tom Brady bolted in 2020, and 2023 may be rock bottom. The Patriots’ offense is only averaging 14.1 points per game, the second-fewest in the NFL. On the other side of the ball, the defense is allowing 23.8 points per game. Quarterback Mac Jones has been benched, and the team’s few bright spots have gone down with injuries.
Brady was honored early in the 2023 season, and team owner Robert Kraft made a special announcement that day. Tom Brady will have another special ceremony on June 12, 2024, where he will be added to the New England Patriots Hall of Fame. June is the sixth month of the season (for each Super Bowl) and the 12th because Brady wore 12. It’s going to be a special day in Patriots history.
Is This a Sign of the New England Patriots Scrapping Another Remnant of the Dynasty Years?
A core piece of the New England Patriots dynasty that was barely mentioned in this article is head coach Bill Belichick. He’s still running the show in Foxborough, even amid the worst coaching season of his illustrious career. There have been rumblings that this season will be his last with the Pats, and this docuseries may hint at that.
Dropping the docuseries and featuring Belichick speaking on past success acknowledges that the dynasty is over. It would be strange for a core piece of the team’s dominant on-field past to remain while performing at a significantly lower standard. Parting ways after this miserable season makes sense, especially since this docuseries would put a fitting bow on one of the NFL’s most significant eras. Parting with Belichick officially gives New England a chance to move on from the dynasty years.
