Just recently, the Denver Broncos decided to let Russell Wilson go, even if it meant absorbing a cap hit worth $85 million. As it stands, the New England Patriots are in need of a quarterback and possess enough cap space to sign him. The thing is, it won’t be a good fit for Wilson at all.
After being traded by the Seattle Seahawks to the Broncos, there was an expectation for Wilson to become the star many believed he could be. Instead, he didn’t really surpass those expectations during his two-year stint in Denver.
In the end, Wilson’s contract became untradeable, and the Broncos were forced to absorb the cap hit to let Wilson go. Now, the quarterback is in search of a new home to play for next season.
On the other hand, the New England Patriots were terrible last season after finishing with a 4-13 record. Next season, though, may not be any different at all for this team.
The Main Reason Why The New England Patriots Are a Bad Fit For Russell Wilson After Denver Broncos Stint
For that reason, the Patriots may be seen more as a rebuilding team, rather than a contender. Jeremy Fowler explained more in his article for ESPN:
“Possible, but much will depend on where New England is in its rebuild. Wilson will prioritize winning, and the Patriots aren’t ready to win big. They need at least a year to replenish the roster. Plus, they have the No. 3 pick, which they could use on Daniels or UNC’s Drake Maye. So, not impossible, but not sure the fit is good for either side,” Fowler wrote.
Rather than waste another season playing for the Patriots, Wilson can do better with other teams Fowler mentioned. Some of these are the Minnesota Vikings, Pittsburgh Steelers, Las Vegas Raiders, and Atlanta Falcons.
It remains to be seen whether Wilson will end up in New England, or not. What’s certain is there’ll be a market for the quarterback, especially when free agency starts soon.
