The New England Patriots, who are currently in a re-building phase after parting ways with long-time Head Coach and 6-time Super Bowl Champion Bill Belichick.
One of the main discussions amongst the Patriots front office is deciding who their quarterback will be for the future of their franchise.
Since Tom Brady’s departure in 2019, New England has not made it do a playoff game and haven’t found stability at the quarterback position.
Mac Jones, who they selected 15th overall in the 2021 draft has been benched multiple times for backup Bailey Zappe in the past two seasons. With the 2024 NFL Draft coming up in the next couple months, the Patriots have a decision to make whether to restart at quarterback or keep Jones for the future.
New England Patriots Front Office “on the same page” About Draft Selection
According to Jeff Howe of the Athletic, there is a “strong sense” that New England is going to take a quarterback with the 3rd overall pick in this year’s draft.
Howe along with Chad Graff added that the organization seems to be “on the same page” regarding finding a new franchise player at the starting quarterback position.
If this rumor comes to fruition, the Patriots will most likely select LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels, who won the Heisman trophy this past season. Quarterbacks Caleb Williams and Drake Maye are expected to be the first two players off the board.
New England also held pre-free agency meetings with different options, but the hefty price tag associated to their names is likely the reason why they are on the same page about drafting a young prospect.
Patriots are Expected to Trade Mac Jones this Off-Season
According to MassLive.com’s Chris Mason, Karen Guregian and Mark Daniels, multiple sources connected to the Patriots believe it’s “still expected” they will trade Mac Jones before next season. Jones, who threw for 2,120 yards, 10 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 11 games played has not been the answer to their multiple offensive problems.
While the Patriots plan to start over at quarterback, Howe and Graff believe that a trade could be mutually beneficial for both parties involved. New England will get an opportunity to chase some high-level talent in this year’s draft with Daniels being the most likely scenario and Jones gets a shot to play under center in a new system.
