It has been a rough year for Minnesota Vikings QB Kirk Cousins. He tore his Achilles and has been out dealing with this injury ever since. However, Cousins is still paying attention to what is happening around the NFL. He even made an NFL MVP case for one particular player.
Kirk Cousins Thinks Brock Purdy Should Be NFL MVP
In an interview with Adam Schefter of ESPN, Cousins made a case for San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy to be NFL MVP. Cousins was notably impressed with how fast Purdy was developing as an NFL quarterback. This is what he had to say:
“I think Brock (Purdy) has a great chance of winning league MVP. I think he is running the system at a very high level. What he did in his first year and second year is incredible, especially on so few reps. I think he’s only going to get better.” -Kirk Cousins
The Case for Brock Purdy
Purdy certainly strengthened his NFL MVP case after Week 15. Now, Purdy leads the NFL in touchdown passes (29) and is second in the NFL in passing yards (3,795). It helps that he had 242 passing yards and four touchdown passes in a Week 15 win over the Arizona Cardinals.
On top of this, some of his direct competitors took big hits in Week 15. Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott and Philadelphia Eagles QB Jalen Hurts were both in the NFL MVP discussion as well. However, both of them had bad losses and poor performances in their Week 15 games.
Purdy’s biggest competition at the moment is likely Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa. He is the only QB with more passing yards this season than Purdy. Plus, the Dolphins put up 30 points against the New York Jets without star WR Tyreek Hill.
The Kyle Shanahan Connection
In Schefter’s interview, he asked Cousins if he ever wonders if there could have been a better connection with 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan. There was a brief moment in his NFL career where the two were on the same team. That was in the 2012-13 seasons when Cousins was the backup QB and Shanahan was the offensive coordinator of the Washington Redskins. Cousins said:
“I know he (Shanahan) has been in my corner my whole career.”
Minnesota Vikings QB Woes
If there is one team that does not have a quarterback in the NFL MVP discussion, it is the Minnesota Vikings. Cousins’ injury has been a big loss for this team. Despite this, the Vikings are 7-7 and hanging on to a wild card spot for dear life. Last week, they started their fourth different quarterback this season with Nick Mullens. Now, they hope Mullens can come up with a big win against the Detroit Lions.
