Even though Kirk Cousins tore his Achilles last season, the Minnesota Vikings quarterback is still expected to command a lot of money in free agency. Thanks to a lot of upside attached to his name, teams that want to improve will certainly chase the QB.
After a slow start to their previous campaign, the Vikings slowly heated up and won five straight games. This pushed Minnesota to have a 6-4 record in the NFC North division.
That all changed in Week 8 when Minnesota faced the Green Bay Packers. In that particular game, Cousins tore his Achilles and missed the rest of the season. This caused the team to stumble further in the standings, until the Vikings were eliminated from playoff contention in Week 18.
In the end, the Vikings placed third in their own division with a 7-10 record. Meanwhile Green Bay, the team’s divisional rival, went on to appear in the playoffs and eliminated the Dallas Cowboys in a surprising fashion.
Minnesota Vikings Star Kirk Cousins Expected To Command High Price Tag in Free Agency
After missing most of last season, Cousins is projected to be healthy again once the new campaign starts. His status as a free agent also means the quarterback is being targeted by several teams in the NFL with enough cap space to sign him. Bill Barnwell explains more in his article for ESPN:
“Any team hoping to win over the next three years that isn’t in position to land one of the top starters in the 2024 draft should be trying to pursue Cousins. That’s a group that includes the Broncos, Buccaneers, Falcons, Raiders, Steelers and Titans, with the Dolphins and Seahawks as outside candidates if they move on from their current starters. Some of those teams will opt for longer shots in the draft, but if Cousins’ recovery is on track, he should be able to get one more significant deal as a 35-year-old free agent.
Average annual salary projection: $51 million per season,” Barnwell wrote.
Cousins’ upside is certainly seen in how his projected price will be paid in the offseason. In any case, the quarterback will surely have an interesting couple of months ahead and a strong chance to play for another city soon.
