Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin talked to his players Tuesday about the rumors surrounding his plans for the 2024 season. Mike Florio with NBC Sports reported before Pittsburgh’s Wild Card game the Steelers’ long-time head coach had not decided on his plans for the 2024 season:
There has been plenty of speculation about Mike Tomlin’s future in Pittsburgh. Although the Steelers will not fire him — and hope to extend his contract — Tomlin has not yet decided to return.
As explained at halftime of Browns-Texans on NBC, Tomlin will be all in until the season ends. Then, he’ll do what he does every year. He’ll reassess his situation and decide what to do.
This year, things are unique for him. He has never before entered the final year of a contract. Past extensions were done with two years left. It’s a factor in the analysis.
Following the Steelers’ playoff loss to the Buffalo Bills on Monday evening, Tomlin walked out of his postgame press conference when a report asked him about the 2024 season and his contract.
Mike Tomlin talks to Steelers’ players about 2024
We have a little more clarity about Tomlin’s thinking for the 2024 season on Tuesday afternoon. According to Mike Garafolo with the NFL Network, Tomlin informed players the rumors of him stepping aside from the Steelers for a season had no basis. Tomlin intends to coach the Steelers in 2024.
In a team meeting today, Mike Tomlin told #Steelers players the speculation about him stepping away is unfounded and he plans on coaching the team in 2024, sources say.

The Steelers supposedly want to extend Tomlin, and Tomlin ostensibly intends to stay in Pittsburgh. For whatever reason, there hasn’t been a contract extension signed by either party up to this point.
For now, Tomlin will head into an offseason to coach the Steelers in the final season of his contract–unless a deal comes to fruition before the season. But questions will surround Tomlin about his future until he signs an extension.
With everything the Steelers need to deal with this season, especially on offense with their quarterback position, they need to extend Tomlin as soon as possible. They don’t need more distractions in 2024.
