The Michigan Wolverines are going through a huge coaching staff change. Jim Harbaugh left for the NFL and took many of his coaches with him, including defensive coordinator Jesse Minter. Head coach Sherrone Moore was looking for a top-tier coordinator to replace him and got his man. Former New York Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale is reportedly taking the job.

Martindale hasn’t coached in the college ranks since 2003. He has been in the NFL for the past two decades and has a ton of experience. He has been the defensive coordinator for the Broncos, Ravens, and Giants in his career. This past season, the numbers don’t look great but it doesn’t tell the whole story. New York’s defense defense ranked 17th overall but was tied for first in turnovers created. The unit was also the best part of the team, as the offense struggled to put up points.
What Are The Wolverines Getting?
Get ready for a lot of blitzing in Ann Arbor. Martindale is known for his heavy blitz packages. The good news for the players is there should not be a huge learning curve. Both Minter and former Michigan DC Mike MacDonald ran a version of Martindale’s defense. The Wolverines have the personnel to run the defense, as they can cover well and have an elite defensive line. There are still some questions on the coaching staff, but this is a huge hire.
The good news for the Michigan Wolverines is the pressure is off. They won the championship, and everything from here on out is icing on the cake.
