The Michigan Wolverines may have won the College Football Playoff National Championship for the 2023 season, but the odds of them repeating are low.
With Jim Harbaugh departing the program and Sherrone Moore taking over, the team’s chances to defend their title drastically dropped. Meanwhile, their conference rivals in Ohio State and another powerhouse rival in Georgia saw their odds shoot up.
National Championship Odds: Where Do the Michigan Wolverines Rank?
According to the latest odds, the Georgia Bulldogs are the favorites to win the College Football Playoff National Championship in the 2024 campaign at +220, with the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Texas Longhorns behind them at +500 and +600, respectively (via Circa Sports).
It’s not a big surprise why the Bulldogs and Buckeyes are favorites. Georgia has Carson Beck returning, and after missing out on defending their back-to-back titles, they should be more motivated entering the new season.
Meanwhile, the Buckeyes undoubtedly had the best recruitment for 2024, with the likes of running back Quinshon Judkins, safety Caleb Downs and quarterback Julian Sayin all committing to the team. With Harbaugh’s Michigan exit and the exodus it caused, Ohio State is in a really good position to dominate the Big Ten conference and compete for the national championship.
On the other hand, Michigan’s odds to win the title again are at a far off +2500. It’s not that bad, but for the reigning champions, it speaks volumes of the major changes that they are currently going through.
Why Do Michigan Wolverines Rank So Low?
Sure enough, it’s not surprising why oddsmakers don’t have a lot of faith in the Michigan Wolverines repeating. After all, it’s not only Harbaugh who left the program when he took over the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers.
Harbaugh also brought several of his Michigan assistants to LA, forcing Sherrone Moore and the Wolverines program into a huge overhaul.
While the roster remains relatively intact, it’s definitely going to be hard for the Wolverines to restart. Not to mention that they will have to do so without JJ McCarthy and the other players who are leaving the program to enter the pro scene.
Moore has coached the Wolverines during the games Harbaugh was suspended last season, so managing the team isn’t new to him. Nonetheless, that doesn’t mean it will be easy with everything that happened to the squad over the past couple of months.
