Spring football has begun for the Michigan Wolverines. While the return of Blake Corum has gotten a lot of the press (rightfully so), another returning player is an important one for the Wolverines. Michigan QB JJ McCarthy had a great year as the starter for the team leading them to a 13-1 record. Now, he is looking to improve. McCarthy had some high praise for new quarterbacks coach Kirk Campbell.

Michigan QB JJ McCarthy On Kirk Campbell

McCarthy did not hold back on what he thinks of new quarterbacks coach Kirk Campbell. “He’s a wizard in the pass game and with developing QBs,” McCarthy said in a recent interview with MLive. While the run game was great last year, the passing game had its struggles. McCarthy at times struggled to air it out and get the chunk plays. He looks to improve on that, and Campbell is a great fit.

    Different Coaching Philosophy

McCarthy also talked about how Campbell’s philosophy of coaching is helping a lot. The previous coach would want to break things down in the meeting room and on film. While this is important, McCarthy likes the new approach. “Kurt was like, ‘Let’s break it down on the field right now. Let’s get to the root of it right away.’” McCarthy said on Campbell’s philosophy. This is a more hands-on approach that hopefully will help McCarthy translate the new concepts to the field during a game.

A lot is riding on Michigan QB JJ McCarthy and the Michigan offense this year. The expectation is for them to return to the College Football Playoff and compete for a national championship. The team has many returning starters and is set up well for this goal. If McCarthy can elevate his game, there is no telling what the Wolverines can accomplish this year.
