In a game that extended into the early hours of Sunday, September 11, Michigan was dominant in all facets of the game in a 56-10 rout of Hawaii.
The fourth-ranked Wolverines came into the contest with a quarterback controversy and by the end of it, there was little doubt which way in the debate they were leaning.
Sophomore quarterback JJ McCarthy got the nod as starting quarterback and he did not disappoint. On 12 pass attempts, McCarthy completed 11 of them for 229 yards and three touchdown passes. His only incompletion came on a dropped pass by receiver Ronnie Bell. Despite the drop, Bell notched six catches for 74 yards and a score.
As for Roman Wilson, a native of Hawaii, he tacked on two more touchdowns. They both came in the first quarter. One was a rush, the other a reception. It was his only reception of the game.
With the starting job seemingly lost, senior quarterback Cade McNamara came in to relieve McCarthy. With McNamara in, Michigan saw less production with the offense. McCarthy would end up coming back into the game and set Michigan up with their sixth score of the first half, a 17-yard pass to receiver Cornelius Johnson.
By that point, it was clear who the starter will be for the future.
McNamara would end up coming back into the game to start the third quarter. In six attempts, he completed four of them for 26 yards. He threw an interception and was sacked twice.
The defense turned in quite the performance of their own. The starters played the first half and shut out an overwhelmed Hawaii offense. The reserves came in for the second half and managed to hold their own against the Hawaii starters.
Even though they gave up points, there were plenty of things to look forward to with the young Michigan reserves.
Michigan, sitting at 2-0, now looks forward to next week’s contest as they host Connecticut. Kickoff is slated for 12:00 PM on ABC.
