The Miami Dolphins are having a 2023 NFL season to remember. Part of that is the play from WR Tyreek Hill and QB Tua Tagovailoa. Their play has not gone unnoticed in the football world.
Right now, both players are very much in the mix for NFL MVP. Despite some controversy, it is Tagovailoa who has the better odds to win the award. However, Hill is encouraging Tua to win the award.
Tyreek Hill Calls NFL MVP a “Quarterback Award”
Neither Hill nor Tua are at the top of the betting odds list for NFL MVP. However, Tua is slightly ahead of Hill at the time of writing. BetMGM has Tua at +800 odds and Hill at +1200 odds. Hill had this to say about the NFL MVP race:
“It’s a quarterback award… if Tua won it, I’d be happy. I’d be happier if Tua won it.”
If you look at the list of NFL MVP winners, you will see that Hill is not lying about it essentially being a quarterback award. The last time a non-quarterback won the award was in 2012. It took a remarkable year from RB Adrian Peterson to secure that award.
Sometimes, record seasons do not even get rewarded. It is well-known that a wide receiver has never won the award. Calvin Johnson and Cooper Kupp had the best arguments in recent years with their single-season receiving yards numbers. However, both failed to secure the NFL MVP award. Unfortunately, it looks like Hill is heading down a similar path even if he surpasses those two receivers.
Miami Dolphins By the Numbers
The Miami Dolphins are putting up elite offensive numbers this season. They have the most passing yards per game in the NFL. Along with this, they are second in points per game.
How do Hill and Tua stack up individually? Both are very impressive. Hill leads the NFL in receiving yards (1,481) and touchdown receptions (12). As for Tua, he has 3,457 passing yards and 24 touchdown passes.
There are five games left to go in the season for the Miami Dolphins. Right now, Hill is within 500 yards of the single-season receiving yards record. However, keep in mind that Johnson set that record back when the NFL had a 16-game season. Still, it is something worth noting if Tua does end up winning the NFL MVP award over Hill.
