The Miami Dolphins made a big splash in free agency on Friday by signing three-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. to a one-year contract worth up to $8.25 million. For weeks, many wondered where the former NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year would sign. Many assumed that he was trying to head to a team located in the western United States so that he could be closer to girlfriend Kim Kardashian.
It appears, however, that Beckham will have to settle for the warm weather and buzzing atmosphere of Miami where he joins a dynamic wide receiver room that includes Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. With his signing, there is a good argument to be made that the Dolphins now boast the best wide receiver group in the NFL.
Odell Beckham Jr. Joins a Monstrous Wide Receiver Room with the Miami Dolphins
OBJ played for the Baltimore Ravens in 2023 after sitting out all of 2022 as he recovered from a torn ACL he suffered in the Los Angeles Rams’ Super Bowl victory. While there were questions surrounding his health, OBJ played in 14 games while catching 35 passes for 565 yards and three touchdowns.
While those numbers are a far cry from the numbers he put up in his first three seasons with the New York Giants, his 16.5 yards per reception in 2023 was the best of his career.
A Super Bowl Champion, OBJ is joining a room that is going to be difficult for opposing defenses to stop. Last year, Hill led the NFL with 1,799 receiving yards, 13 touchdowns, and 112.4 receiving yards per game. He finished sixth in NFL MVP voting, second in Offensive Player of the Year voting, and was named First Team All-Pro and to the Pro Bowl.
Waddle, too, had a stellar season despite missing three games with injury. He still put up 72 receptions, 1,014 yards, and four touchdowns. In 2022, he led the NFL with 18.1 yards per reception.
In addition to Hill, Waddle, and now OBJ, the Dolphins also have 2024 sixth-round pick Malik Washington from Virginia. In his final season of college football, the 5’9″ speedster caught 110 passes for 1,426 yards and nine touchdowns.
2024 seventh round pick Tahj Washington from USC caught 59 Caleb Williams passes for 1,062 yards and eight touchdowns.
Miami Dolphins Star Cornerback Jalen Ramsey Responds to Team Signing Odell Beckham Jr.
As many NFL fans may recall, OBJ is joining one of his teammates on the Super Bowl-winning Rams team by signing with the Dolphins. Both he and star cornerback Jalen Ramsey played big roles in helping the franchise win their first Super Bowl since the days of Kurt Warner.
When news of the signing broke, Ramsey posted the following on social media:
You remember what happened last time right O? @obj pic.twitter.com/r1moDV19hC
— Jalen Ramsey (@jalenramsey) May 3, 2024
Obviously, Ramsey is indicating that the last time the two were on the same team, they won the aforementioned Super Bowl.
After winning the AFC East in 2023, the Dolphins should be aiming even higher in 2024. They were defeated by the eventual Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs in the Wild Card round and hope that the OBJ signing, as well as their other offseason moves, will be enough to help them win their first Playoff game since 2000.
