The Miami Dolphins have Tua Tagovailoa as their quarterback moving forward, but it’s never bad to have some insurance in case the youngster gets injured. That’s where Bo Nix comes in.
While the Dolphins have other positional needs, they might want to take a look at Nix and assess him as a possible Tagovailoa backup. After all, according to a recent report, they are one of the best fits for the Oregon standout.
Making a Case for Bo Nix to Miami Dolphins
In the latest piece by Garrett Podell of CBS Sports ranking the best landing spots for Nix in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Dolphins were actually rated second, only behind the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, Podell did emphasize that there’s no better team for Nix than Miami when it comes to a “schematic perspective.”
Here’s what Podell wrote about Nix’s fit on the Dolphins:
“Miami used play-action on 17.6% of its passes, the second-highest rate in the league. The Dolphins also ranked third in the NFL in screen pass rate (9.6%).
“Nix is college football’s third-most efficient passer on play-action while ranking eighth in the nation in screen pass efficiency in the same span. Oregon also utilized screen passes on 22.4% of Nix’s dropbacks the last two seasons, so he would certainly fit right in with head coach Mike McDaniel’s offense that is designed to get his quarterbacks in rhythm while simplifying the post-snap route progression.
“Current Dolphins starter Tua Tagovailoa had a healthy year in 2023 but given his history of concussions and other issues, having an affordable backup to develop just in case of emergency could be a nice spot for Nix to be in at the start of his NFL career.”
Nix had the best year of his collegiate career in 2023, completing 364 of his 470 pass attempts for 4508 yards and 45 touchdowns against just three interceptions. Nix is definitely one of the more talented quarterbacks in the class, so it’s not a surprise why he’s projected to be selected in the mid-first or second round.
While there are some questions about his game and ability to perform in the pros, he’s someone who can be an elite QB if developed well.
Why It’s Unlikely the Miami Dolphins Draft Bo Nix
Despite the intriguing fit of Bo Nix, it’s unlikely the Miami Dolphins make a move for him. Sure, Miami has the 21st overall pick, but they will be reaching for Nix at that point.
Not to mention that the Dolphins’ biggest needs are on the offensive line and defense. With the future of offensive tackle Terron Armstead still unknown, it might be to Miami’s best interest to prepare for life without him.
With Xavien Howard released as well, the Dolphins might want to find a capable replacement at the cornerback spot.
Sure enough, those are bigger priorities for the team rather than a backup QB.
