On Friday, reports circulated that the Miami Dolphins will part ways with All-Pro cornerback Xavien Howard. The three-time Pro-Bowler, who had three years remaining on his current deal, will become a post-June 1 cap casualty. Howard’s release will save Miami $18.5 million against the cap but will break up the star secondary duo of him and seven-time Pro-Bowler Jalen Ramsey for next season. Ramsey took to Twitter (also known as X) to say his goodbyes to his former star teammate. However, the Super Bowl champ also took a shot at former defensive coordinator Vic Fangio in the process.
Miami Dolphins CB Jalen Ramsey: Takes Aim at Former DC
On Friday, Miami superstar Jalen Ramsey bid farewell to Xavien Howard via social media, calling him the best cornerback in franchise history.
“Shid be crazy how stuff plays out sometimes but 1 thing ikno fa sho is that it was an honor teaming up with the GREATEST corner in Miami Dolphins History, in my opinion.”

However, Ramsey closed the post with a subtle shot at former defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. Ramsey said, “I won’t ever forgive dude for not utilizing our full skillset.” Fangio and the Dolphins parted ways at the end of the season. Reports surfaced following the season that players on the Dolphins disapproved of his coaching style and philosophy. Fan Nation’s Omar Kelly states, “Fangio’s stubbornness and uncompromising ways didn’t sit well with many of his players and other coaches… Several of the team’s top performers wanted Fangio to change his ways or be replaced, and flat-out told McDaniel this.” Meanwhile, defenders Cam Smith and Jevon Holland also made headlines for posting cryptic messages on social media following Fangio’s departure.
Miami Dolphins: Hit-or-Miss on Defense Last Year
Despite housing stars Jalen Ramsey, Xavien Howard, Bradley Chubb, and Andrew Van Ginkel, the Dolphins allowed 23 points per game last season, the 22nd-worst average in the NFL. Opposing quarterbacks threw for 27 touchdowns in 17 games. Cornerback Jalen Ramsey finished the 2023 campaign with three picks, his lowest total since 2020. Meanwhile, now-former teammate Xavien Howard has just one pick.
However, the front seven kept rushers to only 3.8 yards per rush, the sixth-best mark in the league. The Dolphins will operate with Anthony Weaver as their newest defensive coordinator. Weaver spent the past three seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, operating as the defensive line coach and run game coordinator. Meanwhile, former DC Vic Fangio will call the defensive plays for the Denver Broncos.
