Let’s go Tiger Nation
Coach Silverfield updates the media after the First 10 days of practice.
One of the main takeaways is that there still is not a settled running back.
The Tigers are led in experience by Brandon Thomas, a Redshirt sophomore. In the 2021 season he played 9 games, with 116 attempts leading to 669 yards. He had a 5.8 yards per carry, which is impressive considering the amount of games the University of Memphis was forced to pass a lot, working from a deficit. Challenging him for the starting spot is Senior Rodrigues Clark. In 9 games he ran 79 times for 387 yards, a rushing average of 4.9 yards per attempt. Another factor contributing to his usefulness is 0 recorded turnovers in a 3 year career. Also competing for playing time is Marquavius Weaver, redshirt Senior.
Tailback is also another position where no clear starter has emerged.
At tailback there is Asa Martin, a senior. He transferred from Miami after starting at Auburn, where he was a four-star recruit according to 24/7 Sports. . Last year he ran for `108 yards on 34 carries, 3.8 yards per attempt. As a receiver he caught 14 passes for 150 yards. Surprisingly, with a relatively small role he still tallied four touchdowns. At tailback also is Jevyon Ducker a sophomore transfer from Northern Illinois University. He is highly touted, and received third-team AAC honors from Phil Steele Magazine. Coming from Bellevue High School in Nebraska in 2019 he was awarded the Nebraska Gatorade Player of the Year.
Last year the Tigers Running Backs ran for 137 yards (4.0 per attempt) per game, 30 yards below their opponent’s average of 167 yards (4.1 per attempt).
The Tigers have recruited well at offensive line (see my Offensive Line preview here) and that will help them elevate. Certainly Jevyon Ducker has the potential to break out, and perhaps Brandon Thomas steps up even more from last year.
