After a lackluster season, the Los Angeles Chargers are now in possession of the fifth-overall pick in the NFL Draft. While the team is expected to pick tight end Brock Bowers, there’s another prospect that can yield better results next season.
During the last campaign, the Chargers finished fourth in the AFC West division with a horrible 5-12 record. This is considered a failure since the team finished the season prior to the last with 10 wins and seven losses.
Already facing an uphill battle in Week 14 due to a 5-7 record at that time, the Chargers’ playoff hopes were thoroughly smashed when Justin Herbert suffered a broken finger. This led to a string of losses that sunk the team further in the standings.
Los Angeles Chargers Select JC Latham From NFL Draft Expert
Although a lot of mock drafts have Bowers at the fifth spot, ESPN football analyst Mel Kiper Jr. has another player in mind. He explains more below:
“Here’s a big — literally — deviation from my debut mock draft. When I projected the Chargers to take tight end Brock Bowers (Georgia) in January, it was before they had hired Jim Harbaugh as their new coach. And we should know from Harbaugh’s time with the 49ers and at Michigan that he wants to build through the lines, which means starting with the 300-pounders.
The 360-pound Latham started 27 games at right tackle in college, which is where he could slot in for L.A. This is a little bit of a reach in my rankings — Latham is No. 22 on my Big Board — but he’s a nasty run-blocker, which is why I see a fit for him in this offense. He’d form a great pair of bookend tackles with Rashawn Slater,” Kiper wrote for ESPN.
This prediction carries its own set of pros and cons for the Chargers due to a risk of Latham not really performing to expectations. In the event he does, expect the team to make a good run for the playoffs next season.
