After a horrible finish last season, the Chicago Bears are hopeful their campaign later this year will be a better one. The thing is, the team may have to trade Justin Williams and use its number one overall pick in the NFL Draft on Caleb Williams to make that happen.
Last season, the Bears finished last in the NFC North division with a 7-10 record. This marked the third year in a row Chicago had a disappointing finish and their fifth consecutive non-winning campaign.
Even if that’s the case, the team secured the top pick in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft for the second consecutive year. Many expect the Bears to pick Caleb Williams, a choice that will give them a more talented quarterback than Justin Fields.
For his part, Fields had a good run with the Bears last season by becoming the fourth QB to have 5,000 passing yards and 1,500 rushing yards within the first 30 starts since the AFL and NFL merged in 1970.
Chicago Bears Projected To Keep No. 1 Pick In NFL Draft and Trade Justin Fields
Although Fields is talented in his own right, the Bears stand to gain more if they select Williams in the draft. Mel Kiper Jr. explains more in his article for ESPN:
“As we approach the one-year anniversary of the Bears trading the No. 1 overall pick to Carolina, I continue to believe they will keep this selection and move on from Justin Fields. It’s about restarting the quarterback clock and taking one of the best all-around prospects of the past decade. Williams has a rare skill set in terms of arm strength, accuracy, decision-making and mobility,” Kiper wrote.
Using this logic, the Bears can get more quality pieces if they decide to trade Fields to another team. In turn, those pieces can help elevate Williams’ first season in the NFL, and hopefully, make Chicago a lot better than they have been in past seasons.
In any case, there is a lot of upside to keeping the number one pick and trading Fields at the same time. Expect a lot of eyes on the team to see what they’re going to do in the coming months.
