The Los Angeles Chargers have plenty of decisions to make in the offseason, but the most pressing one they need an answer on is their head coaching position. After firing Brandon Staley in mid-December following their embarrassing loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, the team has outside linebackers coach Giff Smith filling in at the interim.
Sure enough, the Chargers are already doing their work in assessing the potential targets for the role. Some big names have already popped as candidates, including embattled New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, Michigan Wolverines tactician Jim Harbaugh, Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, per Josina Anderson of CBS Sports.
“I’m told the expectation at this time for the Chargers is that they’ll run their head coach [and] general manager searches simultaneously, per source. Some early names surfacing around the HC vacancy at this preliminary stage include Dan Quinn, Eric Bieniemy, Jim Harbaugh and possibly Bill Belichick—who all have extensive postseason and/or Super Bowl experience,” Anderson wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
Interestingly, Denver Broncos reporter Benjami Allbright corroborated Anderson’s latest intel, adding that the Chargers have actually “been putting background work into” Belichick, Harbaugh and Quinn.
It will definitely be interesting to see who the Los Angeles Chargers will actually interview for their head coaching job and eventually hire. The LA job is definitely one of the more intriguing roles in the offseason, especially since their next head coach will have the chance to guide a talented quarterback in Justin Herbert.
Bill Belichick and Jim Harbaugh’s names particularly stand out considering how popular they are. But then again, with their futures with their respective teams still uncertain, it’s hard to know if the Chargers will actually have a chance to land any of them.
Bill Belichick, Jim Harbaugh as Los Angeles Chargers Next Head Coach?
Before Los Angeles Chargers fans celebrate the prospect of the team potentially landing Bill Belichick and Jim Harbaugh as head coach, it is important to note that the two are still committed to their teams.
Belichick, for one, is reportedly unlikely to be fired by the New England Patriots because Robert Kraft wants his potential exit to be handled the right way. Belichick can ask for a trade away from the team if he wants, but it’s also possible that he’s given a different role.
As for Harbaugh, he remains mum about his coaching plans. After guiding the Michigan Wolverines to the College Football Playoff National championship, his current focus is on winning with the program. But he did hire an agent with NFL ties recently, fueling speculations that he could make a return to the pros.
At the end of the day, nothing is certain and Chargers fans are better off staying patient until something concrete comes along.
