The Titan secondary is a youthful work in progress grounded by one of the better, if not best safety duos in the league. Forth year strong safety Amani Hooker and Pro bowler Kevin Byard combined for 150 tackles, six interceptions, and allowed for passer ratings of 79.3 and 68.7 respectively. For a comparison, Pro bowler Trevon Diggs of Dallas allowed for a 55 passer rating while James Bradberry allowed for a passer rating of 93.
The youth comes in with four cornerbacks under the age of 24. Starters Kristian Fulton and Roger McCreary are both second-round picks while Elijah Molden, a third-round pick will be subbing in along with last year’s 22nd pick overall, Caleb Farley. If you wanted to know what a Wink Martindale dream secondary would look like, this is close to it. All four were press man corners in college. Though none of them were projected to be world beaters in the pros they are expected to be reliable starters.
The Titans are in an obvious arms race with the likes of Kansas City and Buffalo, attempting to slow down their speedy receivers by getting them near the line. Unfortunately for the giants, those are the teams from which the DNA of the Giant’s new scheme has come. On the positive side, besides Wan’dale Robinson, the Giant’s receivers are not giving up too much size or weight compared to the Titan secondary. There are going to be some interesting match-ups between young draft picks still learning the pro game, which makes things somewhat unpredictable.
The Titans still have familiarity on their side with veteran Janoris Jenkins being the only player to be released from the secondary. He was also statistically their weakest link. The Giants receivers are just at the beginning of hopefully putting it all together in a new system.
