The Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl parade was supposed to be a time of celebration. It was supposed to be a time for the coaches, ownership group, team officials, and players to celebrate the organization’s third Super Bowl victory in the last five years. And while the festivities started out great, the event will forever be remembered by the senseless and cowardly act of violence that brought the celebration to a screeching halt.

While not all facts are known as of this writing, what is confirmed is that three people are in police custody after gun shots were fired during the Chiefs’ Super Bowl parade. So far, 22 victims have been confirmed to have been taken to hospitals. Nine of the 22 victims were children ranging from ages six to 15. Unfortunately, one person was killed as a result of the violence.
In the aftermath of the mass shooting, which was the 49th in the United States so far this year (just 45 days in), the Chiefs organization and several players have released statements regarding the violence. Wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling is working with Children’s Mercy Hospital to coordinate a visit and to find ways to help the children who were victimized by such a senseless act.
Tight end Travis Kelce, too, has released a statement regarding the terrible event that transpired.
Kansas City Chiefs Tight End Travis Kelce Releases a Statement Regarding the Super Bowl Parade Shooting
Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce posted the following statement on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday evening:
I am heartbroken over the tragedy that took place today. My heart is with all who came out to celebrate with us and have been affected. KC, you mean the world to me.

It will certainly take a while for the city to heal from this event. One has to assume that Kelce, MVS, and many other Chiefs players will be a big part of the healing process, and hopefully use their influential voices to advocate for more restrictions and security measures.
There Were Reportedly No Security Measures at the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl Parade
According to Jesse Kirsch of NBC News:
“Most fans who attended the parade and rally didn’t have their belongings checked at the location.
“There were no noticeable metal detectors, and it’s not clear what security checks people would have had to go through to get right up to the stage outside Union Station.”
Frankly, it seems irresponsible that the city would allow such a massive gathering without taking proper security precautions. No wonder the city manager did not want Taylor Swift there today.
