The Kansas City Chiefs are looking to become the first team in NFL history to win three consecutive Super Bowls in a row. They, of course, have a good foundation with three-time Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes under center. Kansas City also boasts future Hall of Fame tight end Travis Kelce and a young exciting group of wide receivers.
The problem with their wide receivers, though, is that they are suddenly lacking depth at the position. Hollywood Brown, who signed with the Chiefs as a free agent earlier this offseason, is going to be out for a few weeks after sustaining a shoulder injury in Kansas City’s first preseason game. Justin Watson and Xavier Worthy have also battled injuries during training camp.
The Kansas City Chiefs May Not Have to Worry About Rashee Rice Missing Time
One of the biggest questions regarding the Chiefs’ depth at wide receiver throughout the offseason was the availability of Rashee Rice. The second-year play was involved in a high-speed car accident in Dallas earlier this offseason.
While he was not injured, others were, and he left the scene of the accident before police arrived. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and he turned himself into authorities four days later.
Rice is facing civil lawsuits as a result of the accident as well as criminal charges. However, the NFL has apparently not had any discussions with the troubled wide receiver, leading many to now believe that he will not face any suspension from the league.
If this is accurate, it will be good news for the Chiefs. Last season, Rice had 79 receptions for 938 yards and seven touchdowns as a rookie.
Disgruntled San Francisco 49ers Wide Receiver Brandon Aiyuk Urged to Reconsider Team
Despite the probability of Rice being available for the full season, there are still concerns over the Chiefs’ wide receiver depth.
In a recent article posted on Bleacher Report, NFL analyst Brad Gagnon listed Kansas City as one of the team’s San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk should reconsider a trade to. “It’s pretty hard to see a downside associated with joining Mahomes, Andy Reid and Co. right now, especially at that position,” Gagnon wrote. “Kansas City isn’t exactly flush with cash, but the team does have some cap flexibility and a marriage with the Chiefs offense might be worth a short-term financial sacrifice if you’re Aiyuk.”
The salary cap, though, would likely keep this trade from ever happening. As good of a fantasy football combination Aiyuk and Mahomes would be, the Chiefs simply cannot afford to pay him what he wants.
If Aiyuk were to reconsider Kansas City, he would have to reconsider his entire stance on a contract extension.
