The Oklahoma Sooners are looking to be more competitive in its second season in the SEC Conference. During the 2024 college football season, they had a ton of controversy surrounding the quarterback position.

In 2025, the Sooners are hoping that doesn’t occur. The starting quarterback for Oklahoma will be quarterback John Mateer. He transferred from the Washington State Cougars. Mateer has a chance to be successful in the SEC Conference during the 2025 college football season.
ESPN Analyst Thinks Oklahoma Sooners Quarterback John Mateer Could Jump Into Top 5 Quarterbacks For 2026 NFL Draft

Matt Miller and Jordan Reid of espn.com ranked there top five quarterbacks potentially for the 2026 NFL Draft. They also talked about one quarterback to potentially watch for during the 2025 college football season that could make a play in the top five rankings. One name that Reid mentioned to potentially watch for is Mateer of the Sooners.
This is an interesting choice. Reid said,
” Mateer has the makings of a riser. He broke out last season at Washington State, passing for 3,139 yards, 29 touchdowns and only seven interceptions, while also rushing for 826 yards and 15 scores. He’ll get a chance to perform on a bigger stage after transferring to Oklahoma. If Mateer excels against the SEC — along with a Week 2 nonconference game against Michigan — his stock will rise quickly.”
During the 2024 season with the Cougars, he completed 64.6% of his passes for 3,139 yards, 29 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He also rushed for 826 yards on 178 carries and 15 touchdowns, along with 4.6 yards per carry. Mateer could provide a different element to this Sooners offense.
Oklahoma could be scoring more points in the 2025 season with Mateer leading the way. The SEC Conference is stacked with quarterback talent, and it will be interesting to see how it will all play out for them.
