The Kansas City Chiefs lost their first game of the 2024 NFL preseason to the Jacksonville Jaguars 26-13. Unfortunately, they lost a great deal more than a meaningless game. Wide receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown suffered a serious shoulder injury that landed him in the hospital.
Many may wonder why a dislocated shoulder would result in a player being rushed to the hospital. ESPN’s injury analyst, Stephania Bell, wrote, “SC (sternoclavicular) joint (where sternum or chest meets clavicle or collarbone) dislocation can be very dangerous (esp if displaces posteriorly, towards critical blood vessels). As a result, has to be reduced (re-positioned properly) in hospital with proper visualization. Then time required for ligaments to heal, render joint stable again, typically multiple weeks.”
As one can see from Bell’s analysis of the injury, it had the potential to be a very dangerous situation for Brown. This is the kind of injury that is oftentimes associated with a car accident.
Kansas City Chiefs Wide Receiver Hollywood Brown Posts an Inspirational Message on Social Media
The expected recovery time of SC joint dislocation is about four weeks. This means that Brown could return close to the beginning of the 2024 NFL regular season but will certainly miss the rest of the preseason.
Kansas City’s first regular season game is against the Baltimore Ravens on September 5, which is just under four weeks away. As the Chiefs will likely play it safe with Brown as they begin their quest for a third-straight Super Bowl Championship, he may not return until Week Two at the earliest.
Brown, though, is not letting the injury get in the way of his optimism for the season. He posted on social media last night:
God makes no mistakes 🙏🏿⏰

It is good to see the wide receiver in good spirits following such a scary injury. Hopefully his recovery does not take too long, and he can play the majority of the season for Kansas City.
The Kansas City Chiefs Needed Better Wide Receiver Depth Even Before the Hollywood Brown Injury
While Brown should return for the majority of the regular season, his preseason injury highlights one of the weaknesses on the Chiefs’ roster: the lack of quality depth at wide receiver. Brown is coming off of a season with the Arizona Cardinals in which he caught 51 passes for 574 yards and four touchdowns. Only Rashee Rice and Travis Kelce had better receiving numbers for the Chiefs last season.
The Chiefs also face the possibility that Rice could face suspension from the NFL for his offseason legal issues. Losing him for any amount of time would seriously hurt Kansas City’s offense.
If the Chiefs really want to improve their wide receiver room in a short period of time, they could go out and get one of their former players, JuJu Smith-Schuster, who was recently released by the New England Patriots.
There are also a couple of disgruntled top-tier wide receivers available (or that could be available) via trade. However, the Chiefs may not want to do the salary cap gymnastics it would require getting and then paying them.
That being said, Patrick Mahomes and the rest of the offense has proven they can win without the best wide receivers in the NFL. As much as fans may want them to go out and get someone else, especially now with Brown’s injury, Kansas City may try to roll with who they have.
