The Kansas City Chiefs are Super Bowl Champions for the third time in five years. Their 25-22 overtime victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII made them the first back-to-back NFL Champions since Tom Brady‘s New England Patriots in Super Bowls XXXVIII and XXXIX. Those were the second and third of New England’s Super Bowl wins with Tom Brady as their quarterback. They would not get another win for 10 years.
Kansas City, of course, just won their third Super Bowl with Patrick Mahomes at quarterback after winning their second last season. Obviously, they hope that they will not have to wait 10 more years before they win it all again. Even before winning it again on Sunday, they took steps to ensure that their dynasty-level coaching staff remains intact.
The Kansas City Chiefs Have an Elite Coaching Staff
With his third Super Bowl win, head coach Andy Reid has cemented himself as one of the best head coaches in NFL history. Before the win, there were rumblings that he may retire afterwards. However, he put those rumors to rest following the win saying he would be back next year.
Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy flamed out as the head coach of the Chicago Bears. While the Chiefs offense has been electric, his shortcomings in Chicago have kept him off of teams’ lists of potential head coaches. In other words, Nagy is not going anywhere.
Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo just won his fourth Super Bowl Championship as an assistant coach. He has found his niche and, like Nagy, is not going anywhere.
The Kansas City Chiefs Gave Defensive Line Coach Joe Cullen a Contract Extension Before the Super Bowl
Of course, in order to build a dominant team, the rest of the coaching staff needs to be exceptional as well. Defensive line coach Joe Cullen, who was the Jacksonville Jaguars defensive coordinator in 2021, is one of those exceptional coaches who was drawing interest in other teams to fill their own vacant defensive coordinator positions.
While many of these vacancies were filled before Cullen was available to interview, it was made clear that some team would snag him sooner rather than later. In order to avoid this, the Chiefs gave Cullen a contract extension prior to Super Bowl LVIII. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter speaking on The Pat McAfee Show on Monday:
“Even their defensive line coach, Joe Cullen, was in demand by other NFL teams and college teams and very quietly last week, they get an extension done for him to make sure he doesn’t leave. So they ensure continuity on their staff and the players are going to be back so, yeah, the overwhelming majority of this team is back to run it back in ’24.”
Cullen has been on the Chiefs’ staff for two years, and they have won the Super Bowl in each of them.
Of course they wanted him to stay.
