The Kansas City Chiefs ended the 2023 season with a Super Bowl LVIII win, but fans will continue to discuss the many storylines that happened throughout the game.
One of the biggest talking points for NFL fans for the coming weeks is the surprising decisions Kyle Shanahan’s San Francisco 49ers made during overtime that may have cost them the game.
The Chiefs’ long-time defensive tackle didn’t hesitate to share his thoughts when he was asked about the Niners’ Super Bowl decisions, even going so far to call it insane.
Kansas City Chiefs’ Chris Jones calls San Francisco’s Super Bowl calls ‘crazy’
Jones was interviewed by the media during his post-game interview. As he answered a myriad of queries, one of the members of the media asked him about their opponents’ decision to go first in overtime.
The Spun’s Andrew Gould wrote about his reaction, calling it illogical that the Niners took such a risk on the biggest game of the season:
“They’re crazy,” Jones told reporters Sunday night, per 610 Sports KC. “Because the overtime rules have changed where both teams get the ball no matter who scores. So, originally, you want to let the other team get the ball, stop them holding the three, so you know what you got. Or if you stop them, they punt it, then all you have to do is kick three.”
The decision, as explained by Kyle Shanahan, was made with analytics in mind. They found that being able to set the tempo during a high-pressure situation would result in them ending up in a better position than their opponents.
However, the Kansas City Chiefs defense—which Jones is a part of—managed to force the Niners into a field goal. Meanwhile, Patrick Mahomes managed to find Mecole Hardman in the end zone to clinch their first back-to-back Super Bowl championships.
With news that Jones is considering calling it a career, Super Bowl LVIII would be one heck of a curtain call for the 29-year-old tackle. However, Chiefs fans hope that he would stay with the team and help them win even more Super Bowls.
