Now that the Kansas City Chiefs have won back-to-back Super Bowls, the goal now is to become the first NFL team to win three straight. Contrary to what the broadcasters of Super Bowl LVIII said postgame, they would not be the first team to win three NFL Championships in a row. The Green Bay Packers did it with two different dynasties (1929-31, 1965-67).
The Kansas City Chiefs Have Holes to Fill
Regardless of the semantics, winning three in a row would be truly historic, but also incredibly difficult. If the Chiefs hope to repeat again, they will need to address a few holes on their roster. Wide receiver, notably, was an area of weakness that will need to be addressed. The problem, of course, is that Kansas City does not have the cap space available to go after a top-tier receiver in free agency.
Rashee Rice was a nice find in the 2023 NFL Draft, and he will continue to get better. Still, it is obvious that the future of the Chiefs long-term passing attack lies in the draft.
One way that Kansas City can take pressure off of quarterback Patrick Mahomes by giving him more options in the passing game would be to pursue their division rival’s free agent running back.
The Kansas City Chiefs Were Named the Best Landing Spot for Free Agent Austin Ekeler
The Chiefs obviously have a solid running back in Isiah Pacheco, but Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Jerick McKinnon are going to be free agents. In order to improve their offensive attack, Matt Bowen of ESPN thinks Kansas City should go after Austin Ekeler in free agency:
“With Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Jerick McKinnon heading to free agency, the Chiefs could sign Ekeler on a short-term deal to work in rotation with Isiah Pacheco. He would give coach Andy Reid a pass-game threat out of 21 personnel with the ability to flex from the backfield. Ekeler caught 51 passes last season with the Chargers and has 440 receptions in his career. Re-signing with the Chargers or joining the Raiders would also be good fits.”
Ekeler had a down season in 2023, accumulating just 1,064 all-purpose yards and six total touchdowns. However, from 2021-22, he had at least 900 rushing yards and 600 receiving yards in each season. He also led the NFL in total touchdowns in both of those years, with 20 in 2021 and 18 in 2022.
Put Ekeler with Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid and the Chiefs offense could be even more dangerous than it has been over the past two seasons.
