Jason Kelce and the Philadelphia Eagles overcame the Buffalo Bills in overtime this past Sunday, and tensions were high throughout the matchup. Off the field, Bills defensive player Shaq Lawson got into an altercation with a fan. On the field, his teammate, Jordan Phillips, was trying to injure Eagles guard Cam Jurgens according to Kelce.
Speaking to Philadelphia radio Station WIP, Kelce said that during a Brotherly Shove play, Phillips did something that “shouldn’t be allowed.” Jason Kelce also added “I said so to the official on the field. I said, ‘Listen I’ve been running that play a lot of years. I have seen people jump offsides. He made zero effort to stop after he jumped offsides.’ He purposely tried to hurt Cam Jurgens. I thought it should have been a personal foul.” An encroachment was the only penalty called on the play.
Jason Kelce is an undisputed leader for this Eagles team, so he’s always going to protect his teammates. Especially the ones next to him, as the offensive line has been the most important part of Philadelphia’s 2023 success. Still, outright saying that another player is trying to injure someone is a bold claim to make.
Jason Kelce Asked For Phillips to be Fined and May Get His Wish
As part of Jason Kelce’s rant, he firmly stated “I think he should be fined for that play.” Well, based on the NFL’s 2023 track record of fining people, Phillips will likely be punished. The NFL has already surpassed the entire 2022 season in total infractions and money paid in fines by players.
Phillips’ penalty (and over-aggressive actions afterward) all came outside of a play. Based on some of the things that have incurred fines this season, this instance should qualify. Then again, the NFL isn’t exactly known for consistency with rule applications. Kelce has put pressure on the league, let’s see how they respond.
