Sometimes, the universe works in your favor, something that Shaq Leonard could be experiencing right now. After getting released from the Colts last week, Leonard may have a new employer soon. According to Josina Anderson, the 9-1 Philadelphia Eagles are interested in his services. Signing with the NFL’s only one-loss team (every other club has three) is never a bad move for a veteran seeking his first Super Bowl.
Philadelphia’s interest stems from linebacker Zach Cunningham injuring his hamstring during Sunday’s win over the Bills. There’s a clear need and fit for Leonard on the Eagles. However, Philadelphia has stiff competition, as the Dallas Cowboys have Shaq Leonard visiting on Tuesday. This NFC East race is heating up on and off the field.
Either option is a clear playoff team that will provide Leonard with playing time. Considering the direct competition between the franchises, he may force a bidding war too which fattens his pockets. This is a great situation for Leonard to be in as a midseason free agent.
What Does Shaq Leonard Bring to the Table?
Drafted 36th overall in the 2018 NFL Draft, Shaq Leonard has had a sensational career so far. In his first four seasons, all with the Indianapolis Colts, Leonard was an All-Pro all four times, highlighted by three first-team selections. He led the league in tackles en route to winning rookie of the year in 2018 and forced the most fumbles in 2021.
However, adversity hit in 2022, when Leonard only played three games. Even for the few games he was healthy, his performance dipped. This year has been better, including nine starts and 65 tackles, but the Colts decided to move on. Now, Shaq Leonard can play for a certified contender to close the season. It’s funny how life works sometimes.
