If it seems like the repeated instances of NFL players paying the league office for nonsense are at an all-time high, it’s because they are. At the very least, 2023 is shattering what players had to endure in 2022. According to Front Office Sports, this season has already surpassed the previous one in fine infractions and the total money of those fines.
The entire 2022 NFL season:
• 166 infractions
• $15,448,694 in finesThrough Week 11 of 2023:
• 326 infractions
• $15,578,867 in fines pic.twitter.com/c1bt0J4Ref— Front Office Sports (@FOS) November 26, 2023
That’s right, after only 11 weeks this year, the NFL had fined players for nearly twice as many infractions as all of 2022. Along with that, $15.5 million worth of punishments has already been handed out. With eight more weeks worth of potential fines still on the schedule, the league could easily exceed $20 million in total fines for 2023.
A lot of them have been criticized for not being fine-worthy. Odell Beckham Jr.’s Week 11 fine was for flashing the peace sign on the way to the end zone because that’s apparently a heinous activity. Amon-Ra St. Brown’s infraction was essentially for blocking too hard. It’s out of control.
What Does the NFL Do With All of the Money Collected From Fines?
At least the league isn’t just pocketing the millions of dollars that they’ve forced players to pony up. Rather, fine money is donated to the NFL Foundation and Professional Athletes Foundation. Those organizations for former players should see plenty of change headed their way when 2023 is finished.
According to the league’s site, players can protest any fines being taken out of their check. The smallest fine that the NFL enforces is $5,464 for various first-time uniform violations. There are a pair of violent violations for second-time offenders that send $76,702 to the league office. It seems that they’re paying more attention than ever to every infraction this season.
