After making moves on the offensive side of the ball including signing wide receiver Gabe Davis to a 3-year deal, the Jacksonville Jaguars have shifted to the defensive side of the ball signing Green Bay Packers safety Darnell Savage. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the deal is expected to be for 3 years, but the total earnings have not been reported yet.
Darnell Savage Missed 8 Games Last Season Due to Injury
Savage, who was drafted 21st overall by the Packers in 2019 has been a productive member of their secondary for the past 5 seasons. However, he dealt with multiple injuries in 2023 and missed 8 games during the regular season. He was only able to combine for 51 total tackles, which is the lowest of his career and did not catch an interception.
In the 4 seasons prior to 2023, Savage never missed more than 3 games and combined for 9 interceptions. He has proven to be a useful piece in a secondary in years past while playing in Green Bay and will do so in Jacksonville if he can stay healthy.
Jacksonville Jaguars Secondary Gave Up 6th Most Passing Yards Per Game in 2023
Despite the injuries, Savage joins a Jaguars secondary that struggled in 2023. They were the 26th ranked pass defense and gave up just under 240 yards per game to opposing quarterbacks. With the addition of Savage, there is a chance for improvement heading into next season.
Savage will be under contract in Jacksonville until the 2027 season and hope to make an impact immediately to reignite his production. For Green Bay, they will have an opportunity to re-structure their secondary and look to free agency for a replacement.
