The Houston Texans are re-signing eight-year veteran safety and special teams mainstay Eric Murray to a one-year deal, according to NFL reporter Aaron Wilson.
Eric Murry was put on injured reserve in 2023, but he started 29 games for the Houston Texans before that. The team is also hoping to re-sign nickel cornerback Desmond King, according to Wilson.
The Houston Texans are re-signing Eric Murray, who brings experience
Even if Eric Murray is unable to contribute on the field due to injuries like last year, his veteran presence can bring something to a young team with a young head coach in DeMeco Ryans.
Murray came into the league as a fourth-round pick by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2016. He then made his way to the Cleveland Browns for a year before spending the last four years with the Texans. His most productive two years in the NFL came in 2020 and 2021 with Houston.
He had a combined 147 tackles and an interception with six pass breakups over those two years. He only has 40 tackles over the last two years, but the Texans aren’t sacrificing much with this cheap one-year deal. A lot of Texans fans aren’t exactly excited about the re-signing of Eric Murray.
The man simply has evidence of something because he continues getting renewed contracts with the same team every time he’s up for it. WTH is going on here. Seriously.

The Houston Texans are ignoring a loaded safety market with the signing of Eric Murray, but he could be used as a depth piece
A plethora of All-Pro and Pro Bowl safeties have been released in the last few days making for one of the most loaded safety markets in recent history. Over $100 million in cap has been cleared by releasing safeties across the league.
Notable safeties hitting free agency this offseason include All-Pro Justin Simmons, Jordan Poyer, Xavier McKinney, Quandre Diggs and Rayshawn Jenkins.
In an article from CBS Sports, one NFL personnel executive explained why safeties are getting the running back treatment when it comes to contracts this offseason.
“There’s so much opportunity to overcome physical talent with high level intellect and intangibles. So you don’t have to overspend to get production,” one NFL personnel executive told CBS Sports. “You can draft these guys Day 3 or put low free-agency resources into them and get production back if they are smart.”
With the signing of Eric Murray to a one-year deal, the Houston Texans still have a chance to get a top-tier NFL safety. That being said, they could follow the advice of this NFL personnel executive and attempt to go for a safety in the draft.
