It’s rare to see NFL players stay with one team for a long time. So whenever a player on a franchise like the Dallas Cowboys stay with one team, it wouldn’t be weird to expect them to hang up their cleats with that same team.
That’s what many probably thought when Tyron Smith began his 13th season with the Cowboys last season. He also thought the same until he was released by the organization during the hustle and bustle of the 2024 offseason.
Now that he’s off to find another team to call home, he gave a sincere message to the team and fanbase he thought he would only play for his entire career.
Tyron Smith says farewell to Dallas Cowboys fans after New York Jets signed him
According to The Spun’s Matt Hladik, Smith was understandably emotional in the message he gave out to the fans of the only franchise he’s ever known:
“Thirteen years sure is a long time to sum up in one short letter to thousands of people who have made my time in Dallas so memorable,” Smith wrote on Instagram. “It’s been a long and wild ride with filled with plenty of ups and downs but Cowboy Nation, you all have been there through it all.
“Cowboy Nation–thank you for everything. While I’m excited for this next part of my football career, part of my heart will forever be left in Texas. Until we meet again…”
One can read from his letter that the time he spent in Arlington really meant a lot to him, and it will be just as weird for him as it will be for the fans to see him play in a uniform that isn’t dyed in Cowboys blue.
A look back into Tyron Smith’s epic Cowboys career
Smith was a plug-and-play starter from the moment he was picked with the ninth overall pick in the 2011 Draft. His combination of size and athleticism made him a mainstay in the Cowboys O-line.
Aside from 2017, he played at least 90 percent of all available snaps, which is a testament to his longevity. During his 13-year stint with the Cowboys, he made eight Pro Bowls, two First-Team All-Pro teams, and the All-2010s Hall of Fame team.
His presence in the trenches of Dallas will be sorely missed by Cowboys fans.
