The 2023 College Football Playoff (CFP) was met with a lot of controversy. That is because the Florida State Seminoles went 13-0 this season. Yet, they were left out of the College Football Playoff.
Several fans, former players, and members of the media have sounded off on this. It has led to a giant debate on whether the CFP committee made the right decision. Well, one former player made his opinion quite clear on this subject.
LeRoy Butler Sounds Off on College Football Playoff
LeRoy Butler recently spoke publicly about his opinion on the CFP committee’s decision to leave the Florida State Seminoles out of the playoff. This is what Butler had to say about it:
“You have a right to your opinion about the best 4 teams playing in the college fraud playoffs, but I don’t have to RESPECT it either,#GoNoles”
As you can see, Butler clearly disagrees with this decision. Based on this quote, Butler believes that the Florida State Seminoles should have made the College Football Playoff. An important note here is that Butler was a defensive back for Florida State from 1987 to 1989.
This is more than likely a response to people who say they did not deserve to make the College Football Playoff. One person who was outspoken about this was college football commentator and analyst Kirk Herbstreit. He said:
“Alabama is BETTER!! Period! So is Texas. So is Michigan. So is Washington. So is Oregon. So is Georgia.”
An important note here is that Florida State QB Jordan Travis suffered a season-ending injury right before the College Football Playoff teams were revealed. As a result, there was a strong debate about whether the best teams or most deserving teams would get the nod. Given how this played out, Butler does not believe either was achieved here.
LeRoy Butler Super Bowl History
So, how is Butler qualified to comment on this? For one thing, he played for Florida State for three seasons. It is safe to say that this issue may hit closer to home for him.
Also, Butler went on to have a great NFL career. He has won at the highest level, as a member of the 1996 Green Bay Packers Super Bowl champion team.
Butler played in the NFL for 12 seasons. The vast majority of those seasons were at the strong safety position. In the 1996 Super Bowl season, Butler had five interceptions and returned one of them for a touchdown. On top of this, he recovered two fumbles.
During that season, the Green Bay Packers had the best record in the NFC. They were given a fair chance to prove just how good they were in the playoffs. Plus, the defending Super Bowl champion Dallas Cowboys had a mere 10-6 record. Dallas ended up getting knocked out before they could even face Green Bay.
Given that path to Butler’s Super Bowl, it is no wonder why he feels so strongly about this. It does not hurt that he played for the team negatively impacted by this decision.
