The College Football Playoff committee is still catching flak for their controversial inclusion of the one-loss Alabama Crimson Tide over the undefeated Florida State Seminoles in this year’s rendition of the postseason field. At the center of the CFP hate train is college football sportscaster and ESPN College GameDay analyst Kirk Herbstreit, for publicly making it known that he approved the CFP’s decision. The angry mob of Seminoles fans have taken aim at Herbstreit in recent weeks, but now the former Ohio State Buckeyes signal-caller has taken to Twitter (also known as X) to clear the air.
Because Alabama is BETTER!!
Period! So is Texas. So is Michigan. So is Washington. So is Oregon. So is Georgia. I watch 10-15 games a week live from September-early December. I think I’m allowed to have an opinion on who I think is BETTER!! If FSU doesn’t like itbis “The BEST 4”… https://t.co/gWJXL5xHnw— Kirk Herbstreit (@KirkHerbstreit) December 13, 2023
College Football Analyst Kirk Herbstreit Explains Why He Liked Alabama Over FSU
“Because Alabama is BETTER!! Period! So is Texas. So is Michigan. So is Washington. So is Oregon. So is Georgia. I watch 10-15 games a week live from September-early December. I think I’m allowed to have an opinion on who I think is BETTER!! If FSU doesn’t like (it’s) ‘The BEST 4,’ tell the conference commissioners to change the protocol to ‘MOST DESERVING.’ Until then, I and everyone else is certainly allowed to give an opinion in a subjective discussion!! Don’t like it-change it.”
Herbstreit’s latest comment about his belief that Alabama deserved the final CFP spot over Florida State is telling and straightforward, saying the Seminoles weren’t even close to being a top-four team in his mind. Herbstreit referred to one-loss Georgia, two-loss Oregon, the Washington Huskies, and the Texas Longhorns as better teams than the Noles.
Herbstreit continued, saying, “I’m not on the committee-I don’t vote-I watch games-I analyze teams, and I give my take. That’s it. And if you think I have an agenda or a motive, I’m sorry you feel that way, but it’s wrong.” One of ESPN’s top college football personalities, Herbstreit, is not among the 13-person panel that makes the ultimate decision in deciding the four-team postseason field.“If it’s for your team you love me and if it’s against you, hate me. I wish it were different and hopefully next year with 12 teams it will be. I am a huge fan of Coach Norvell’s and his team and wish the Noles nothing but the best.”
Kirk Herbstreit: In the Crosshairs of the FSU Faithful in Recent Weeks
Florida State Seminoles fans have taken aim at Herbstreit after the college football personality made known his support for the College Football Playoff Committee’s decision to select Alabama over Florida State. However, in his most recent tweet, the 54-year-old illustrated when the Seminoles were the beneficiaries of controversy.
Herbstreit referenced the 2000 Florida State Seminoles squad as the last team from Tallahassee to pull a fast one on the college football world. Despite a 13-2 record and losing to the 11-1 Miami Hurricanes earlier in the year, the Noles earned a spot in the NCAA National Championship against the Oklahoma Sooners. FSU lost 13-2. However, Florida State fans have gone after Hernstreit’s throat recently, resulting in the former college quarterback airing his grievances on Monday’s edition of the Pat McAfee Show.
“All these people that are upset, did they ever break down – when they get to a cluster of teams – this is what the committee is asked to follow. Have you ever heard that? When they b—h and complain. They don’t like facts. They don’t like information. They like conspiracy theories.”
The NCAA switched to a committee over the Bowl Championship Series in 2013. In the previous format, college football used a combination of polls and computer selection methods to decide the two best teams in the country. However, with the expanded four-team playoff emerging in 2013, a 13-member committee has now been selected and seeds the country’s top four squads.
