Former Atlanta Falcons head coach Arthur Smith is one of the most polarizing figures among the city’s football fans. Some will respect the job he did to transform an aging roster into a football team with a high ceiling. Others will look at his inability to maximize Kyle Pitts and Bijan Robinson during his final season.
The controversial coach spoke up on his three-year stay during one of his first media appearances as the offensive coordinator of the Pittsburgh Steelers, using choice words to describe his stay with the team.
Arthur Smith claims his Atlanta Falcons stay was interesting
Arthur Smith did his best to hit all the right notes during his first interview as the Steelers’ OC, according to a Fresno Bee piece credited to ESPN’s Daniel Flick. He was thankful to the Steelers for giving him the keys to offense while also thanking the Falcons for the learnings he got from the experience.
“Obviously thankful to be a part of Pittsburgh, but as all the different stops on my coaching journey, very grateful for the opportunity I had in Atlanta,” Smith said.
He then went on into further detail about what happened to his coaching job in Atlanta, giving his side of the conversation.
“It was a unique situation, essentially rebuilding a team” Smith said. “There were some good lessons learned. It was a tough lesson, but it’ll help me here, especially with some of the young players here that we have, and how you fit the offense and try to play to those guys’ strengths.”
Atlanta Falcons fans will be thanking him and GM Terry Fontenot for acquiring talented weapons in Kyle Pitts and Bijan Robinson. However, his inability to maximize Desmond Ridder under his system and a plethora of curious coaching decisions ultimately cost him the job.
Smith will be joining a team with a slightly better situation with the Pittsburgh Steelers, but the NFC North team is also without a solid choice for QB. If he and head coach Mike Tomlin don’t find the right signal caller for the job, this stay might end up as a quick pitstop for Smith’s journey to return to NFL head coaching.
