To say the Pittsburgh Steelers’ decision to hire Arthur Smith was shocking is an understatement. The fact that the former Atlanta Falcons head coach was able to find a job so quickly was something that confounded both the team’s most avid fans and spectators look on in disbelief.
Smith’s tenure with the Atlanta Falcons was marred by his inability to maximize the abilities of his talented players, and many were convinced that it would take a while before he found another coaching job in the NFL.
However, one particular fan argued that Smith is actually a better coach than the person he replaced.
Is Arthur Smith a Better Pittsburgh Steelers Coach than Matt Canada?
Matt Canada was the offensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers before Smith. He was also let go for his inability to build a decent offense for Mike Tomlin, so it was a shock when the team decided to give Smith the keys to Pittsburgh’s offense.
However, Steelers Depot’s Matthew Marczi argued that there’s one aspect Smith is a better offensive coordinator than Canada in, which was being a mentor.
He wrote to support his stand:
Smith is a teacher, whereas Canada is a general. You don’t ask a general why you’re doing something; you just do it. Smith wants you to know why he is asking you to do something so that you can best execute it.
It creates buy-in from the players. Players who believe in what they’re running will execute at a higher level. And you can’t buy into what you’re doing if you don’t know why you’re doing it.
The ideals he pushed were great and are definitely practiced among the top teams in the league. However, ideals could only go so far if the shotcalling is shoddy at best.
During Smith’s final year with the Falcons, the team was ninth in rushing yards (2159) and 22nd in passing yards (3524). While he can blame the subpar passing game to Desmond Ridder, the failure to rely on powerful offensive weapons like Bijan Robinson and Kyle Pitts was a shortcoming that is too glaring of an error to deny.
Of course, it’s best to give Smith a chance since the Pittsburgh Steelers did give him a chance. But if history was anything to go by, they may not be getting an upgrade over what they were running offensively last season.
