Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton is keeping mum on his viral outburst towards Russell Wilson that has since gone viral.
For those who missed it, Payton was caught on camera yelling at Wilson late in the third quarter of their showdown with the Detroit Lions after the Broncos failed to score on three consecutive plays. Denver had to settle for a field goal at that point after back-to-back plays were ruled short of the goal line, while the time they made it to the end zone, a guard was called for offside.
Interestingly, when broadcast cameras panned at Payton, he was seen chewing at Wilson with a rather astonishing animated reaction.

It confused a lot of people since it didn’t look like Russell Wilson was at fault at all for the Denver Broncos’ failure to get a touchdown. Not to mention that many pointed out how Sean Payton didn’t throw a challenge flag in the two plays before the offside penalty that could have resulted to a TD.
When asked about the heated moment, however, Payton said that he was simply angry about the offsides call. “That’s all. Simple,” the Broncos tactician said, via Andrew Mason of Denver Sports.
However, Payton refused to answer what he told Wilson during the viral exchange. “Listen, what I talk to Russell about is none of your business,” the coach added.
It’s certainly a rather bizarre incident, which should only intensify the concerns about the partnership between the QB and the coach.
Sean Payton Gets Denver Broncos Backlash Over Russell Wilson Treatment
As mentioned, many were not happy with how Sean Payton treated Russell Wilson during the game. After the Denver Broncos lost to the Detroit Lions 42-17, critics took to X (formerly Twitter) to share their displeasure over the clear lack of respect the veteran coach has for his QB.
“Is that on the QB if the OC has called the play in his helmet? Either way, very unprofessional of Payton,” an X user commented on Andrew Perloff’s video of the moment.
Another commenter said, “Yes he [Wilson] rushed the play but would he [Payton] have yelled at Drew Brees like that? I could be wrong but I have never seen him yell at Drew. This isn’t the first time either. He has no respect for Russ.”
“I don’t see how these 2 can continue to work together after this year. He just jumps at every chance to snap at Russ, and Russ hasn’t even been bad this year. Russ has to go home and throw darts at Paytons face,” a third commenter shared
Things aren’t really looking good for the Broncos. They dropped to 7-7 on the season following the Week 15 loss, and while they still have a chance to make the playoffs, their unity is suspect. If Payton and Wilson’s relationship continues to be an issue, it could very well be the cause of their downfall.
