While the Russell Wilson-Denver Broncos experiment struggled last season with Nathaniel Hackett, Sean Payton has really figured out how to turn around the former Super Bowl Champion. The Broncos had a slow start to the season but have been able to make a major push in the past month.
Defensive Turnaround of the Denver Broncos
Earlier in the season, the only reason anyone was talking about the Denver Bronco’s was because of their historically bad performance against the Miami Dolphins. The Defense gave up 70 points against the leagues best offense in the Miami Dolphins in Week 3. The 70 point mark was the most any team has scored in a single game since 1966.
Since that game, the defense has had a remarkable turnaround and have only given up more 22 points twice. Given the talent this team has in the secondary with Pro Bowl cornerback Patrick Surtain II and safety Justin Simmons. Its also significant to point out that in that stretch came wins against the elite offense of the Kansas City Chiefs, Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills and the currently-playoff bound Browns team.
Denver Broncos Russell Wilson’s Elite Performance
The other big story with this season is the resurgence of Russell Wilson. So far this season, Russell Wilson is sporting a quarterback rating of 103.4 which is fifth best in the NFL. Wilson has thrown for 20 touchdowns and only 4 interceptions as Payton has managed to reorganize the Broncos’ offense to limit mistakes. Wilson has been able to make high-percentage throws and has been able to get out of the pocket fairly efficiently.
The Bronco’s will look to make a playoff push after they’ve won five games in a row and only face two more teams with winning records. Those games will come against a strong Houston Texans team with C.J. Stroud this week and then a struggling Detroit Lions team.
The following tweet summarized Wilsons stats for the year.
